That's really cool.

My dad was in the Air Force and stationed in Korea during the war in the 50's. They would fly control line and when a plane was nearing the end of its "life cycle" they converted it to free flight. One in particular plane was aimed south, but turned north and landed either in enemy terotory or in the DMZ. Either way they could see it, but couldn't go get it without getting shot.  :nono

I still have one of his old O&R engines that survived and an old red head mccoy racing engine that has never been run.

That was interesting....but I believe it was a electrical corded system, however, Dieter Schluter was , I think , the first RC copter inventer.. I could be wrong .Here is a video of that. It was said he traveled the nation flying anywhere he could and exhibited rc heli flying,,,,and I believe it was the heli-boy he flew.

Here is a mention of the first controllable RC copter

I own an original Schluter Mini-Boy... something you don't see everyday. In those days, there were gyros but no helicopter radios. You had to use mechanical take-off angles off the servos arm-disc to get the right mix for the tail proportions. I did this on a Kalt Baron 28 I bought at a KCRC charity event many years ago and flew it without a heli radio. Didn't have an autorotation clutch either . Had a (Webra-I think) 32 with it with a blown squish ring , which I replaced and used for my training as it ran fine saving the new motor that came with it for later.

The engine never had a flame out...ever...guess I was lucky.
