ideas for warbird plane
« on: November 06, 2011, 02:07:13 AM »
since my birthday is next sunday, i've been thinking about getting a warbird for my next plane. I would be going in 50/50 with my parents. I've been looking at the Airfield/FMS BF-109, P-47, and the zero. and the starmax A-1 skyraider(not sure if available in the US). any other ideas?

All the Airfield models look great to me and I love the 1400mm size.

The only thing about these that I've heard is that, if you get a ARF/RTF version, the motor/esc's that they put in these are generally cheapo stuff and can burn out on the first few flights.  I don't know if this has changed recently; it may have.  But people that want the nice foamy warbirds still buy from Nitroplanes and replace the cheapo gear with better equipment.

I'd agree with what Kerbob said, the FMS/Airfield planes look great, are pretty well made, and very popular.  As you know, I have the P-51, the size is great, and so far the electrics have worked fine.  I will say however, I haven't had much opportunity to fly it lately, so it doesn't have too many flights on it yet.  I did install a separate BEC, so if something should fail I will still be able to control the flight control surfaces.  They do sell them in kit versions without electrics, but I think you'll find they aren't that cost effective that way.  I'd suggest going the route I did, buy the RxR ready version, put in a BEC for some insurance, and replace things like the motor and ESC when they fail.  There are many people flying these models for a long time on the stock gear, far fewer have had them fail in the first few flights, there's just no way to tell.  But then again, that's the way it is with everything in this hobby, the same can be true for the most expensive components.  There's really no guarantee when dealing with electrons and the components that move them.

If you want a foamy warbird, you'll be hard pressed to find one that looks better than the FMS/Airfield models, they put a lot of work into the detail of their models, and they seem to respond to customer requests for improvements, improving from one version to the next.  The P-51 I have is a V6, so it's gone through a bunch of improvements through it's lifetime.  The price is excellent too, in fact, many of the planes you mentioned are on sale right now at Nitroplanes in the RxR version.  Just remember though, when you get into these size of planes, most of them require 4S batteries, so if you don't have any you'll have to factor those into your budget.

ok. i really want the BF-109 from airfield but i guy said airfields was working on a new version on rcgroups and I've been in contact with nitroplanes through e-mailed them and asked them about it and they said airfields was working on one but it probably be awhile, so i may just get the current RxR version of it when it comes back in stock around black friday.and i do not have any 4s batteries but i think the RxR version comes with one I'd be happy with just one for awhile.

I have the P-51 (older/ not as good version as Eric's) and the Spitfire. IMO both required some tweaking to make them right. They are certainly not as "fly out of the box" as parkzone's are. I agree that a UBEC is a necessity. Both of mine are ARF's with original servos and motors. The Spit has a stock ESC but I don't really trust it. I put an aftermarket ESC in the P-51. I also have the old version of the Bf-109 kit which I am working on now. it will have all aftermarket stuff. The new 109 should come out toward the end of the year and it looks fantastic. Overall these kits fly very good and you can tinker with them and personalize tham as you wish. Here is a link to my blog on RCG with pics of my re-paints. I can't seem to get pics to show up on this site.

Regards,
Alan

The old one is a Bf-109E which is a Battle of Britain / early war variant. The scale police brutalized it but its a good flier according to those that have it. Mine will have a few minor modifications to make it look more scale. The new one (Bf-109 F) has a thread dedicated to it on RCG "Electric warbirds" even though the plane is not out yet. Pics are in there and it has a godawful paint scheme in my opinion but the plane looks awesome. Look for Nitro to get it about 1-2 months after it comes out.  Early 2012 if i had to guess.

Alan

Nice blog Big Al!  Did you have all those planes when Eric and I first met you at 'The Hill"?  Wow.. quite a collection of nice warbirds.

TCCobra,
If you're going to get an airplane from HobbyKing and you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for shipping and wait a month or more to get it, type "usa warehouse" in the quick search and you'll see all the airplanes they stock in the U.S. The P-47 isn't one of them, but they do have many other warbirds. I don't know anything about that 1100mm Durafly P-47, but I see that it is about a foot shorter in wing span than the 1400mm Airfields.
