I was just watching some videos of the redbull air race and thought to myself how cool it would be to do something similar with rc pylon racers as FPV. It'd be a real challenge to find a plane that is both stable, manoeuvrable and fast whilst being able to provide accurate FPV footage. If anyone has any insight as to how or if this is possible I'd love to hear it as i may attempt it myself in the future.

With the current FPV live down link stuff that some us have it would  be easy and even easier with the small spy  key chain cams with a 8GB card in it, and watch it later.. Paul and I have already been talking about doing this for a demo once the racing season is up and running..

Kerbobs correct,
Electronics have came a long way... I will post a pic of what I use (which has a 2.4 fpv cam and transmitter, an IBCrazy inverted v and a keyfob #3 dvr camera for watching  a better picture later) , and could be /has been flown on most everything I fly including a little tiny 18" ws crescent wing that carries lights and costs 50 cents in dollar tree foam board to build (about 10 minutes build time)

The little wing hardly knew iThe FPV/cam/dvr was "attached" yet I flew it all over the area we could set up pylons at 3-10 feet above the ground....at about 50 mph.

Yeah, it takes a bit of fpv skill to fly that low that tight, but is easily achieved...just like flying pylon after only flying sport .

With the FAA descision looming in the future, that will probably 'take out' the fpv distance flying for the most part, it would be a lot of fun to do fpv pylon and short range formation flying....

The key IMO, is a super stable , a little slower than normal pylon racers type plane. It would obviously have to react stabley and quickly to control inputs and be extremely predictable and smooth.

A few advantages such as protected prop area and electronics and 'cheap' so replacement is easy would become a norm as there will be mishaps. ''

It must be somewhat slower than the 100mph racers as all it would take is one good glitch and your plane digs a 6 ' long furrow...or takes out a spectator (not good) A buddy box pilot assitant would not have time , nor even realize fpv control would have been lost, to 'take over'..so that option would nit work effectively.

IMO, best case scenerio, would be a race of foamies (like deltas or wings), (foamboard has cheap advantages) that have an area protected for the fpv/cam gear and protected props so when you get ' up close and personal' you don't get shot down nor take another plane out.

Just some 'thoughts'... I'm working on several designs and already have several that can easily be used....one could limit it to Slow Sticks as well...but unless they have ailerons installed, the're not a quickly responsive plane...and may be a bit slow....but who knows...may be a blast.

that would be pretty cool to pylon race dollar tree foamies. im working on a edge 540 with the dollar tree foam the build started off fast but school has taken over so haven't had any time to build.also any tips on when cutting the foam out i've been using a box cutter it did alright with the fuselage but it was ruff in some areas, i may try to build a hot wire foam cutter to cut the foam or is there another easy way to do it?

I use a boxcutter or a pen sized Olfa (snap off blade) like I used to use striping cars. The plastic ones like it at the hardware stores for 99 cents do just fine.

There is a possibility that a hotwire (running cherry red) would cut it but would leave scorched edges...but hey, nobody said a disposable racer had to be "pretty".

Fact is , for $5 you could bring a stack of em'...with the radio/motor etc on a snap-off pod that an be interchanged in just a few minutes in the event one bites the dust.
Endless possibilities....bottom line....FUN and cheap

I'm ready...

A couple in the club are getting airtime on the DollarDelta and the Dollar Delta V2. One is re-learnig to fly...the other is experienced and likes the 'replacable wings' and cheap cost idea as well as it flies really well especially for how cheap and fast it is to make one.

I have another design that I am proposing to  be a club pylon racer...also costing a buck for the airframe, takes about 30 minutes to build. and so far everyone loves how it flies (even has a cool convenient 'launching' handle that looks like a spoiler). I will post a pic of it later.

It hit the ground in a straight down 60 + mph 'Oops :D' dive (me accidentally pulling up elevator while inverted) and just wrinkled nose... I straightened it , chucked in a fresh battery and was flying inside of 5 minutes. Has the widest speed envelope you can imagine. and looks like its going 100 sitting still.

I am setup now to fly any of them FPV ...I can add my FPV gear in 15 minutes to any of them.... only problem I want to change to 5.8 instead of the 2.4 gear I'm running as it creates 'venitian blind' video effects from all the 2.4 radios transmitting around me.

Should have new 5.8 tansmitters in March....BTW now have a better monitor system as well as a HeadPlay set of goggles. Having experienced the excess sunlight on the headplays lack of shielding, I have created a mod (may sell them) that is cheap , durable, looks good and keeps the light out on the HP's

I'm all for some 'bang em and clang em' pylon action... Yeah, some -up close and personal- flying.. :D
