Sonic Combat Anyone?
« on: November 03, 2009, 07:54:25 PM »
Anybody using the PZ sonic combat modules? I recently got the EZ-XPORT adaptor so now I can use it on any of my planes that are large enough. I am currently re-building my brushless modified PZ FW to be my SCM plane as my opponents are in RAF colors. Anyone else interested in this sort of thing? It's a blast but there is inherent risk of midair etc.

Regards
Alan

If you get it going, give us a report.  I mostly do SSC combat with a handful of people around town, but have also wondered about those units.  Even with them, I suspect you may be surprised with the number of collisions.  Of course, that also depends on the range and width of the transmitter/receiver target system. I also came to the conclusion that you need a fairly large plane to carry all of the extra gear - what size I don't know.

I've got a PZ Super Cub that would be perfect for this.  How much for the XPORT and Sonic Blaster modules?  I may join you if the price is right.  8)

The EZ-Xport cost $35 plus a couple of bucks shipping. Not cheap but not too bad either. He'll send as many units as you want to buy with no additional shipping. The actual SC module can be had for around $15 and you may need an extension for it that comes w/ PZ planes depending on how you mount it. You'll also need two 6" standard servo extensions. the EZ-Xport itself is very small and the SCM is very light so no trouble carrying the equip but you would have to be willing to risk plane damage.
As far as the size plane, I think pretty much any plane larger than say the smaller GWS planes could carry it. I have used an E-Flite P-47 as well as a Super Cub and the modded out PZ FW-190 which will carry it when I finish it. These are all ~40" ws foam planes. I haven't tested the range yet but I think you need to be fairly close and tail shots seem to be best. Unfortunately, my nephew is very cautious and he would fly straight up to get away and his plane climbs  insanely. I finally got a kill on him (audible only as his motor won't cut on hits) but it took awhile and quite the furball. His Dad has a very pretty newly built GWS P-40 and I think he is a bit reluctant to risk it. He'll come around in a few days. These really are a blast and add a new element to flying.

Alan

I bought a Sonic Combat module at the new hobby shop off of Top Side road. They didn't have the EZ-Xport so I still need to get that.  But.. I'm a step closer to combat with my modified Supercub.

Hey guys,

I'm the inventor of the EZ-XPORT and also a UTK alum - Go Vols.

Check out the review about the EZ-XPORT here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1105533

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.  There are lots of pictures at RCGROUPS and RCUNIVERSE about the Sonic Combat module and EZ-XPORT, just google it to see different configurations.  Flying combat with these things is way too much fun.

Best Regards,

Welcome to the forum!  I've still got my setup..  What I lack is someone else that has one.  It's no fun having a gun and no target.
Are you still in the area?  Are you still doing anything with this hobby?

To all..
If you're reading this.. you now know that I have a EZ-XPORT and am ready for combat with my Super Cub.

I'm in Austin TX for the past decade but I do miss being back home from time to time.  If we can only beat Florida!

You need to get someone to fly with and get the combat going - we do it just about every weekend and what a blast, especially over a few beers.

You definitely need to move back up here and get out of that heat!  I hope the fires have stayed away from you and yours.  I think its neat that the inventor of the sonic system is a Tennessean.  Are you still involved in RC?

Definitely.. I'm on board for some sonic combat.

That would be cool to have tied to a smoke system so it turned on the smoke for 5 sec when you got hit  :D

Not only a Tennessean but a UT Graduate!  I got my BSEE there and graduated in 1992.  First degree was at MTSU in 89 so I'm an old timer :)  Watch all of the games here while being tortured by hearing how Texas had a tough one against Rice or Baylor - geese.....

Yes I am still in the hobby and 98% of the flying I do is combat with a friend.  I've flown electric and gas, hotliners and gliders.  We stick with the Parkzone warbirds for combat.  They are fast and easy to repair.  Parts are readily available and a good glue gun can fix any broken part of the plane.

As for smoke, that is fairly easy.  All I need to do is change the software a little and have it use one of the connectors as an output to fire a smoke module.

There's a bunch of combat in the area, but it's full on using hardened planes specially designed for full on combat.  I get involved with Slowstick combat at KCRC on Sundays.  Were you ever a member of one of the local fields while in Knoxville?

My time in Knoxville was pure college and backpacking in the Smokies, no RC at all.
